Since we know how much communication skills are important, we always look to improve the speaking and writing communication skills. However, we usually forget that body language takes an important part when communicating to others.
Including body language when you communicate is done by coordinating nonverbal actions such as posture, facial expressions and movements together with your speaking, in order to emotionally deliver the message in a more qualified fashion.
Why body language is important for you?
Almost everyone which has a job, either an office or a field position, needs to communicate with people on a daily basis. For business men and leaders, it is crucial to communicate well and skillfully with the people around (colleagues) and with business partners, vendors, audience and customers.
Using body language skills together with good verbal skills will include emotional touch to any message you can deliver, this will show to the other person that you put real interest on what you are saying.
Your body language signals makes a big impact to the people which you are talking to. There are many ways to use body language to improve the quality of your message; however there are also other ways that could send a bad impression of your message. Many people know that using good body language habits is important when talking to others; but then few minutes after they start talking, they usually forget what they are doing with their body.
I have selected few body languages tips that can significantly improve the quality and impression of the message you are communicating:
Smile
Smiling to others is very important because it shows to other persons your well-being, your optimism, and your will to cooperate, listen and trust. When you talk to someone smiling, it shows easiness and honesty, it works especially when you want to show that is not difficult to do something. When you listen smiling, probably the person talking to you will smile in return, which might change his or her emotional state in that moment, to a positive way.
Don’t cross your arms
Crossing your arms is the same as putting a NO sign on your forehead to any person who looks or talks at you. Yes, it is that bad, even if you smile while doing it, it can give a worse message. The signals you send when you cross your arms are of being defensive in a mental, emotional and physical way. Keeping your arms open shows more receptivity and that you are open to listen new ideas.
Dress accordingly
If you have an important meeting or a message to deliver, the way you dress might take a significant part on the results you want to achieve. Did you know that the color you wear might affect other’s people mood? For example, wearing blue or green might send a message of calmness and honesty, wearing black shows power, or wearing red or yellow can actually distract or cause intense emotions. Use a dressing code according to what you want to get.
Use your hands
Use your hands while speaking, is the best way to send a quality message to your listeners. Moving your hands is the best gesture to improve thinking and helps to speak sentences in a more progressive and explainable way.
Increase the voice to emphasize
While you are speaking, it is important to change the voice tone from time to time. Increasing the voice in some words, using exclamation tones, it will show emotions that will help to deliver the message better.
Keep a good posture
Keeping a generally good posture while you are in a conversation, listening or talking can make you appear confident, professional and sometimes even powerful. People which are in the conversation with you might be very much influenced only by the way you pose.
Keep an eye contact
When you are listening, keep an eye contact to the person that is speaking, it shows you are paying attention to their words, it is important for them to know you are listening. Nodding your head and moving forward also helps.
