The company's success comes from these lasts years, at the beginning, even being a remarkable idea, the company did not became popular since the beginning, and faced several technical problems.
Here are 3 business lessons from Twitter that you should take as an entrepreneur or businessmen:
1. Try to form an elite team
The idea of Twitter, became from a brainstorming session of several Internet business experts, and the people (specially the founders) behind it already had good background on internet startups.
Twitter was co-founded by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone and Noah Glass. Jack Dorsey, is a web programmer which created softwares of dispatch logistics which was used for taxi companies; Evan Williams, is the co-founder of Pyra Labs and co-creator of Blogger (which eventually was sold to Google); Biz Stoned also helped to develop Blogger and Xanga (another blog platform) and Noah Glass was a great contributor of Macromedia (famous for the flash player).
Lesson: All of the founders had a great background in programming and internet business. If you are forming a business with some partners, or you want to discuss your business ideas with someone, ensure that you find the best experienced persons, try to form an elite team that can ensure you that you will reach success.
2. Be patient and consistent
Since the beginning, the founders did not consider that the Twitter idea was going to grow exponentially and become that famous, however they kept working on the project, even when they had some technical problems with the site's stability during the beginning. Twitter was officially launched in 2006, they started to gain popularity in the SXSW conference in 2007, where it was when the company's users quantity started to grow rapidly.
Lesson: If you think you have a great business idea, always give it a try, but it is better to be patient and keep consistency while running the project. There are projects that start reaching success months or years later after their original launch. Keep working on your ideas and don't give up, they will eventually bring results.
3. Take all the opportunities
Twitter's participation in the South by Southwest Interactive (SXSW) conference in 2007 was the turning point where they started gain popularity. They received the Web Award prize on that conference. If they wouldn't be there, things might have go differently.
Lesson: When running your business, don't let miss any of the opportunities that comes to you, it is better to try all the ways to make your company grow, than let them pass and regret later. There are many opportunities passing by, and the more you take, the more chances you can reach success with your business.
